FBDA Upgrades

Conway Engineering strive to achieve the best efficiency and highest quality FBDA system on the market, whether this is a disc, tube or strip. Our design team selects the best solution for each project. An example of some of our FBDA projects is listed below.

Castletroy WwTP, Co. Limerick

The overall scope of this project was to replace the existing surface aerators with a Fine Bubble Diffused Aeration System to cater for a design population of 35,000 PE

We completed every stage of the design, construction, installation and commissioning for this project with the following overall scope:

  • Removal of existing aeration equipment.
  • Fully functional fine bubble diffused aeration (FBDA) system on stainless steel removable grids
  • Stainless steel piping
  • Design, manufacture and installation of 4 no. bridges to provide access for all valves on FBDA System
  • Five no. blowers Aerzen Hybrid D24S positive displacement blowers
  • Complete mechanical and electrical installation
  • Adjustments to existing electrical system and PLC/SCADA to cater for new FBDA system
  • Testing and commissioning

In addition to the FBDA contract, Conway Engineering also completed the following ancillary works:

  • Removal of existing stairs and handrailing on both aeration tanks to replace with triple height to 1200mm hand railing and new stairs so as to adhere to H&S regulations
  • Supply and M&E installation of 2 no. step screens. Manufacture and installation of horizontal screw conveyor to complete screening system at inlet works
  • Refurbishment of Jones Atwood 900 series grit removal system to put back into operation
  • Refurbishment of Salsnes Filter to put back into operation including M&E installation of corresponding pump and air blower

Birr WwTP, Co. Offaly

Birr WWTP was constructed in 1989 and has a design P.E. of 12,000. The plant consists of inlet works with archimedean screw pumps, inlet screening and degritting facilities, two aeration tanks each with a working capacity of 1,483 m3, two clarifiers and two picket fence thickeners. Aeration in each aeration tank was provided by 1 xNo. 30kW vertical surface rotor driven by 30 kW Danfoss variable speed drives which were controlled by the dissolved oxygen setpoint in each tank

The scope of the FBDA project included the following main elements of work:

  • Removal of existing surface aerators in each of the two tanks
  • Fully functional fine bubble diffused aeration (FBDA) system on stainless steel removable grids
  • Stainless steel piping
  • Three Aerzen D24S Hybrid positive displacement air blowers were installed (Duty Tank No.1/Duty Tank No.2 with 1xNo. common standby)
  • Two no. VSDs for existing RAS pumps
  • Mechanical and electrical installation
  • Adjustments to existing electrical system to cater for new FBDA system
  • Installation of power metering
  • Testing and commissioning

In addition to the FBDA contract, Conway Engineering also completed the following ancillary works:

  • Refurbishment of step screen to put back into operation, mechanical and electrical installation of same.
  • Removal of existing stairs and handrailing to replace with triple height to 1200mm hand railing and new stairs so as to adhere to H&S regulations.

Kepak Watergrasshill

The overall scope of this project was to install a fully functional “turnkey” Fine Bubble Diffused Aeration System in a new aeration tank at Kepaks’s meat processing facility in Watergrasshill, Co. Cork. Conway Engineering assessed the requirements and completed the design to adequately cater for the facilty’s requirements and comply with discharge limits. Following completion of the design, the complete mechanical and electrical installation was executed by our in-house team, including a CE certified bridge structure traversing the tank.

Moate WwTP, Co. Westmeath

Design and installation of FBDA system for 2 no. tanks

WM Grant Distilleries, Tullamore

Conway Engineering designed and installed an efficient FBDA system to meet the Client’s needs using Jager tube diffusers.

Castletown WwTP, Co. Laois

As part of the upgrade to the entire Castletown WwTP site, Conway Engineering designed and installed the FBDA system for upgrade to the SBR tank. This was another tank that was emptied, cleaned and complete M&E installation in 1 working day.

Kilkeshin WwTP, Co. Clare

Conway Engineering are extremely efficient in delivery of small bespoke projects. An example of which is Kilkeshin WwTP FBDA Upgrade in Count Clare.

In one working day, we completed the following:

  • Specialist contractor drain down and emptied the aeration tank
  • Remove all existing equipment in the tank
  • Install a fully functional FBDA system on stainless steel liftout grid using Jager disc diffusers
